In the wake of a dramatic citywide eviction, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has cleared street vendors from Kampala, leaving thousands stranded but not without hope, thanks to a bold message from passionate Women Empowerment Advocate Dr Aisha Ruth Kasolo.
The February 2026 operation, described as swift and uncompromising, began shortly after midnight following orders announced by State Minister for Kampala Kabuye Kyofatogabye. Vendors were warned to vacate or face arrest. By morning, busy areas like Old Taxi Park, Mini Price, Kisekka Market, and Nakivubo Road had been cleared.
Makeshift stalls were torn down, goods removed, and security forces including police and the military, ensured full enforcement. For the first time in years, streets once packed with traders became open and walkable. Pedestrians could now move quickly through the city, a major shift from the usual congestion.
The crackdown did not stop in Kampala. Similar operations have since spread to other cities and districts, including Masaka, Fort Portal, Arua, Mukono, and Wakiso, signaling a nationwide shift in urban management.
But as uncertainty grows among displaced traders, Dr. Kasolo is offering a powerful alternative.
She explains that the idea that a successful business must be located in central Kampala is outdated. According to her, many fast-growing areas such as Bwaise, Matugga, Kawanda, Kawempe, Nateete, and Nansana among others now offer real opportunities for traders to rebuild.
She points out that rent in these areas is far cheaper, and in some cases, traders may even find free or shared spaces to operate from. More importantly, she emphasizes that business is no longer limited to physical locations.
Dr. Kasolo highlights the rise of online trade, noting that many entrepreneurs are now successfully selling goods through social media without owning shops. She encourages vendors to embrace digital platforms and also take advantage of crowded community spaces such as markets, schools, places of worship, parking areas, and entertainment spots.
She stresses that success begins with one customer, explaining that a single buyer can lead to many more through referrals, eventually building a strong network.
Her message is clear and urgent: do not lose hope. She urges displaced vendors to adapt, innovate, and remain determined.
