UPDF Opens 2026 Recruitment Drive, Targets Skilled Professionals and Youth Across Uganda

By Ben Musanje

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) under the leadership of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has launched its 2026 general recruitment exercise, opening thousands of opportunities for young Ugandans and skilled professionals seeking to join the military service. Detailed video recording here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78P8lbW3l3g&t=83s.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs through the Department of Defence Public Information at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala on Friday, June 5, 2026, the UPDF announced that online applications will run from June 10 to June 24, 2026, through the official recruitment portal.

The nationwide exercise seeks to enlist both regular recruits and professionals from a wide range of disciplines, reflecting the military’s growing demand for specialized skills in areas such as information technology, engineering, aviation, healthcare, education, law, sports, and social sciences.

Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Col. Chris Magezi, said that recruitment quotas for cities and districts will be determined using data from the 2024 Uganda National Population and Housing Census to ensure equitable representation across the country.

“The UPDF invites all qualified, disciplined, and patriotic Ugandans to take advantage of this opportunity to serve their country,” Col Magazi noted.

The recruitment process will be conducted in three phases. The first phase involves online applications, where aspiring candidates must upload their passport photographs, academic documents, and National Identification Cards through the recruitment portal.

A shortlist of successful applicants will then be published on the UPDF website and displayed at district and city headquarters between July 1 and July 14. The final phase, consisting of physical recruitment, medical examinations, and interviews, will take place nationwide from July 20 to August 1.

Applicants are required to be Ugandan citizens holding valid National Identification Cards, physically and medically fit, law-abiding, and resident in the areas where they apply. They must also secure recommendations from local leaders, including LC I, LC II and LC III chairpersons, the GISO or DISO, and the Resident District Commissioner.

Among the largest categories is the recruitment of general forces personnel aged between 18 and 22 years. Candidates must possess Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) qualifications obtained in 2024 or 2025, with specific academic requirements depending on whether they are applying under arts or science combinations.

According to Col Magezi, UPDF is also targeting information and communication technology professionals below 25 years of age. Degree and diploma holders in disciplines such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Information Systems, and Cyber Security are eligible to apply.

Engineering and logistics personnel are another key target group. The force is seeking graduates and experienced technicians in fields including civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, architecture, quantity surveying, land surveying, firefighting, vehicle maintenance, welding, plumbing, carpentry, refrigeration, and heavy equipment operation.

The Air Force component of the UPDF is looking for pilot instructors, qualified pilots, aircraft maintenance engineers, air traffic controllers, and meteorologists. Applicants must possess relevant professional qualifications and meet specified age requirements.

The health sector represents one of the most extensive recruitment categories. The UPDF is seeking specialist doctors, pharmacists, medical officers, dental surgeons, nurses, allied health workers, psychologists, biomedical engineers, health informatics experts, and records management personnel.

Specialist doctors in fields such as oncology, cardiology, radiology, neurology, paediatrics, psychiatry, ophthalmology, anaesthesia, emergency medicine, family medicine, and internal medicine are among the professionals being sought. Health professionals are required to have valid practicing licenses and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

The military is also recruiting advocates with at least five years of legal practice, graduate teachers qualified in science education, talented sportsmen and women, social scientists, psychologists, and musicians with expertise in marching band and live performance.

In a notable move, the UPDF has strongly encouraged professionally qualified women to apply, signaling continued efforts to enhance gender representation within the force.

Military authorities warned prospective applicants against fraud, emphasizing that recruitment is entirely free of charge.

“Recruitment into the UPDF is completely free of charge, and no agents or intermediaries are involved in the process,” Col Magezi stressed, urging the public to report suspected fraudsters to the police, district security officials, or UPDF units.

The force also cautioned that presenting forged academic credentials or falsified documents constitutes a criminal offense and could result in arrest and prosecution.

Successful applicants will receive introduction cards after the physical recruitment phase and will be required to present them upon reporting to designated training centers.

The 2026 recruitment exercise comes as the UPDF continues to modernize and expand its operational capabilities, increasingly relying on specialized expertise alongside conventional military training. By recruiting professionals across multiple sectors, the force aims to strengthen its capacity to respond to emerging security, technological, medical, and logistical challenges.

Col Magezi says the exercise remains anchored on the UPDF’s core values of discipline, patriotism, and Pan-Africanism, while offering qualified Ugandans a pathway to national service and career development within the country’s armed forces.
