As he opened the new MPs’ induction seminar at Speke Resort Munyonyo, Speaker Oboth-Oboth jokingly revealed why he doesn’t regret the fact that Abdul Katuntu, once his senior, won’t be part of the 12th Parliament.
He made it clear that Abdul Katuntu, who was in the audience having been invited as one of the resource persons to induct the new MPs, was one time among the senior legislators he admired as a back bencher as of 2011 when he first became an MP. Katuntu, who during the 15th January elections lost his Bugweri County MP Seat, had been around for much longer.
In a veiled reference to the fact that Katuntu was always a strong-willed legislator on the opposition side (originally as a UPC and later on as an FDC diehard), Oboth-Oboth (who is a diehard Movementist) congratulated himself about the fact that the Katuntu-induced headache won’t be part of the many problems he will have to contend with as a presiding officer for the 12th Parliament.
While pointing at Katuntu, who sat within spitting distance from where he was speaking from, Oboth-Oboth said organizers inevitably had to invite Katuntu because he had used his many years of serving as MP to distinguish himself as a dignified and knowledgeable legislator who was always objective even though he was from the opposition. But it’s also true that Katuntu was a key advisor to the disgruntled former Speaker Anita Among who Oboth-Oboth replaced.
