For reasons which couldn’t be readily established, some of the Uganda-hosted refuges living in the Imvepi Refuge Settlement in the West Nile district of Trego on Tuesday went on rampage and burnt down a huge administrative building belonging to the Department of Refugees under the OPM/GoU.
The building had been constructed by the OPM under the DRDIP project and it cost Shs1bn. The tragic incident is happening at a time when the leadership at the scandals-riddled department of refugees is in total disarray following the ousting of Commissioner Patrick Okello.
Having tried his best to streamline the management and stamp out corruption, including cracking the whip on bribes-soliciting brokers, Okello was recently forced to step aside and Mr. Tony Ameny was chosen to serve as caretaker in his absence.
As per now, there is growing dissatisfaction as refugees protest sex exploitation and corruption tendencies in especially refuge registration processes. At the time of writing this story, investigations were still ongoing as to what angered the refugees to the point of burning down the DRDIP building.
