During the Thursday session at Parliament, Hoima City Woman MP Asinasi Nyakato was compelled by Physical Infrastructure Committee chairperson Mpaka Mwine to retract her words that had painted Bukoto Central MP Richard Sebamala as gun for hire for the embattled Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) officials who appeared before the 12th Parliament’s (so far) most feared Committee to respond to scandalous findings contained in the Auditor General’s previous reports. Benon Kajuna, the MD for URC, struggled to explain himself over alleged failure to protect the Corporation’s prime land in Kampala against being grabbed by well-connected property developers and also against failure to recover over 390 train wagons which went missing. There were several other allegations which MPs like James Waluswaka, Nyakato and others kept putting to Benon Kajuna who led a powerful delegation of all members of top management.
As Kajuna struggled to explain himself out of a litany of scandalous allegations legislators kept putting before him, in the full glare of media cameras, Sebamala seemed to become sympathetic with his defense that he was not in position to satisfactorily respond to some of these things because he had only been URC MD for just one year.
This infuriated Nyakato who burst out demanding to know what the URC officials had given to Sebamala for him to be all of a sudden too defensive of them as opposed to coalescing with fellow MPs to ask the hard questions, in order to meet the expectations of his voters. Sebamala protested while maintaining his innocence. As he did, the chairman Mpaka weighed in demanding that Nyakato withdraws her unsubstantiated claims and also apologize, which she grumblingly did to the consternation of the journalists present.
