The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has announced significant progress in efforts to improve water access in Kalungu District following the completion of the new Kalungu Water Supply Project, a major infrastructure investment designed to strengthen water service delivery in the area.
According to NWSC’s statement on June 20, 2026, the newly completed project has a production capacity of 4,000 cubic metres of water per day and is expected to play a crucial role in addressing longstanding water supply challenges in Kalungu and surrounding communities.
The utility revealed that technical teams are currently undertaking a series of interventions aimed at ensuring water produced by the facility is effectively evacuated and distributed to consumers. The ongoing works include the installation and commissioning of critical distribution infrastructure necessary to connect communities to the new supply system.
NWSC stated that the interventions are intended to improve the reliability and consistency of water services in the district, where residents have previously faced intermittent supply and increasing demand driven by population growth and urban development.
The corporation explained that following the successful completion of the 4,000m³-per-day water supply project, its teams had shifted focus to implementing key measures required to evacuate and distribute water to the community. It added that efforts were underway to finalize the remaining works necessary for the system to operate at full capacity.
NWSC further indicated that the ongoing interventions would significantly improve water supply reliability in Kalungu and surrounding areas once completed.
When fully operational, the project is expected to expand access to clean and safe water for households, institutions, and businesses across the district. Improved water availability is also anticipated to enhance sanitation, support public health initiatives, and contribute to local economic development.
The development forms part of NWSC’s wider programme to expand water production and distribution infrastructure across Uganda in response to growing demand for safe and reliable water services.
Officials expressed confidence that the project would substantially improve service delivery and help reduce supply interruptions that have affected some consumers in the district over the years.
The corporation reaffirmed its commitment to providing clean, safe, and reliable water to all customers within its areas of operation, emphasizing that continued investment in water infrastructure remains critical to achieving broader national goals for access to safe water.
Residents are expected to begin benefiting from the upgraded system once the remaining distribution works are completed and the new infrastructure is fully commissioned.
