This Thursday Yusuf Nsibambi (who sources say is being vetted for the position of Deputy Chief Justice) was a guest speaker at Uganda Law Society’s Radical New Bar weekly media interface.
This was at the ULS’s head offices in Kololo where Nsibambi was made to debate with his former student and successor in the FDC parliamentary whip office Anna Adeke Ebaju.
Nsibambi gave his views on many contemporary governance issues in the country including his own recent defection from FDC to NRM and the ongoing efforts to convince Gen Museveni to pardon and release thousands of young people who angered him by embracing Bobi Wine’s Protest Vote campaign, which security considered to be disruptive and chaotic.
His defection left a vacuum which FDC (for which he was Deputy President) filled up by appointing Anna Adeke. Kilak County MP Gilbert Olanya also wanted the role of FDC whip.
Nsibambi said in their recent interaction, Gen Museveni made it clear to him that he was very angry with such disruptive youths and was prepared to teach them a lesson.
He said all Museveni now wants is for those young people to become remorseful, own up to their mischief and seek his forgiveness.
Nsibambi said it was self-destructive for such young people to remain combative while demanding an apology from Museveni on grounds that his government locked them up for nothing because they are innocent.
He said he was grateful his talks with Museveni are going very well to the extent that even before end of this week, he expects 80 more such political prisoners to be released.
He said he is also trying to convince Museveni to create a fund comprising of several billions out of which such repentant political prisoners can be rehabilitated with some startup capital. He told his audience that Museveni is a very good man whose goodness he had all along misunderstood.
He advised the young people to accept that elections are over and now concentrate on working with entities like the ULS to demand service delivery to develop their respective communities.
