A delegation from the Republic of Mozambique has visited the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) to explore opportunities for cooperation in livestock genetic improvement, conservation and commercialization.
The delegation, comprising officials from Mozambique’s ministries responsible for Agriculture and Veterans, visited NAGRC&DB as part of a bilateral engagement coordinated by Uganda’s Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs.
During the visit, the delegation toured the National Bull Stud and Livestock Experimentation Station, where they were introduced to the agency’s work in animal breeding, genetic resource conservation and the commercialization of improved livestock technologies.
NAGRC&DB officials also delivered a technical presentation outlining the agency’s programmes and interventions aimed at improving livestock productivity and strengthening Uganda’s animal genetic resources.
The presentation covered a range of areas, including animal breeding and reproductive technologies, gene banking, fish breeding, liquid nitrogen production, animal feed production and farmer outreach programmes.
The visit also provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss areas where Uganda and Mozambique could deepen technical cooperation in agriculture and livestock development.
Key areas identified for potential collaboration included the exchange of animal genetic resources, capacity building, genomic technologies and the development of climate-resilient breeding programmes.
The two sides also explored possibilities for cooperation in genetic resource conservation and animal feed production, areas considered important for strengthening livestock productivity and resilience.
The engagement comes amid growing efforts by African countries to share technical expertise, technologies and innovations to address challenges affecting agricultural production and food security.
For NAGRC&DB, the visit provided a platform to showcase Uganda’s experience and capabilities in animal genetic improvement while opening discussions on possible partnerships with Mozambique.
The agency said the engagement further strengthens the longstanding relations between Uganda and Mozambique and creates opportunities for greater technical collaboration in agriculture and livestock development.
The visit is expected to contribute to knowledge exchange and institutional linkages between the two countries, particularly in the application of modern breeding technologies, conservation of animal genetic resources and the development of livestock systems capable of responding to changing climatic conditions.
The engagement underscores the potential of bilateral cooperation in advancing agricultural innovation and improving livestock production across the region.
