At their recent sitting, members of the Makerere Senate completed the assessment and vetting for candidates (basically top notch professors) who earlier on put in their applications seeking to be considered for the position of College Principal. These are like Presidents for the different colleges at Makerere and wield considerable power.
Their positions in the University hierarchy come immediately after the Vice Chancellor, his two Deputies and other members of top management (basically the University Secretary, Academic Registrar, University Bursar & Dean of Students). The Principals oversee the management, all the academic and administrative processes at the Colleges where all the teaching, reaching and academic work is conducted from. They also qualify to be members of the senate, the top academic decision-making which is headed by the Deputy VC in charge of academic affairs.
Following the job advert the University ran in newspapers a few months ago, it was clear which Principal positions are vacant and it’s against that background that a good number of ambitious professors put in their applications.
From the very many who applied, the following have been vetted and found to be suitable by the Senate which voted on them and subsequently forwarded their names to the Governing Council for additional processing. It’s after the Council vote on each of the names Senate has forwarded that the best will be determined and given the jobs of Principal at the respective colleges.
FULL LIST: The names include Associate Professor Gorette Nabanoga whose name has been forwarded and recommended by Senate for the position of Principal College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences (CAES). Prof Yazidhi Bamutaze has been recommended for the position of Deputy Principal.
For College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), Professor Ireeta Tumps Winston has been recommended for the position of Principal and Dr. Godwin Kakuba as his Deputy. At the College of Education & External Studies (CEES), Professors Muwagga Mugagga Anthony and Ronald Bisaso have been recommended for the position of Principal.
They are both well credentialed and the burden to choose one best has been left for the Council to handle. One has been the incumbent and he is seeking new term. For the position of CEES Deputy Principal, the Senate has forwarded two names-Dr. Nicholas Itaaga and Dr. Joyce Bukirwa.
At the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-security (COVAB), two Professors have been cleared to have their names decided upon by the Council for the position of Principal and these are-Clovince Kankya and Frank Norbert Mwiine who has held the position before. Dr. Acai Okwee James’s name has been cleared for the position of Deputy Principal.
For the College of Computing & Information Sciences (CoCIS), Prof Engineer Bainomugisha’s name has been forwarded to Council for the position of Principal. At College of Humanities (CHUSS), the name of Professor Eddy Joshua Walakira has been selected and sent to Council to be considered for the position of Deputy Principal.
