FEMALE LAWYER BROWNIE EBAL BOOK REVIEW: Law, Life & Laughter Launch Inspires Conversations on Purpose, Resilience and Impact

By Guest Writer

The launch of Law, Life & Laughter: A Witty Memoir of Faith, Failure & Finding Purpose brought together leaders, professionals, young people, members of the legal fraternity, family and friends for an evening of reflection on resilience, purpose, leadership and impact.

The book was officially launched on Friday, 4 September 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Silver Springs Hotel, Bugolobi, Kampala, under the theme “Life Through Lived Experiences.”

Written by Ugandan lawyer, governance professional, philanthropist and author Brownie Ebal, Law, Life & Laughter also challenges the perception that authorship must wait until much later in life.

Ebal represents a younger generation of professionals choosing to document their experiences while they are still actively building careers, navigating challenges and discovering purpose. Through the book, she reflects on faith, failure, ambition, professional life, unexpected turns and finding purpose, often using humor to make difficult experiences relatable.

Her message, particularly to young people, is that one does not have to have lived an entire lifetime before their experiences can teach, encourage or inspire someone else.

Faith, Resilience and Keeping Going

The Guest of Honour, Hon. Sylvia Alinaitwe, MP representing the Kigezi Region, attended on behalf of Hon. Balaam Barugahara, Minister of State for Local Government.

In her remarks, Hon. Alinaitwe encouraged young people to have faith, remain steadfast and keep moving forward, even when life does not unfold according to plan. She encouraged them to read the book and learn from the experiences shared in it.

She went a step further by purchasing 100 copies of Law, Life & Laughter, demonstrating her support for the book and its message.

Hon. Omara Paul, MP for Otuke Constituency, challenged young people to recognize their talents and use them for good. He urged them to look beyond personal advancement and consider how their abilities could contribute to the development of Uganda.

What Legacy Are You Leaving?

Delivering a keynote address, Robert Kabushenga challenged guests to think beyond conventional measures of success and consider the impact their lives are having on others.

His message centered on fundamental questions: What are you leaving behind? How many people’s lives are better because of you? How many Ugandans have you positively touched?

Kabushenga also emphasised the importance of intergenerational relationships.

He encouraged young people to keep older people close and draw from their wisdom, experience and lessons from roads already travelled. At the same time, he challenged older generations to develop meaningful relationships with young people, who can expose them to fresh thinking, emerging opportunities and different approaches to technology, business and wealth creation.

The message was simple: generations become stronger when they learn from one another rather than exist separately.

Be Bold. Be You.

In another keynote address, Dr. Joyce Nalunga, President of the Female Lawyers Network, challenged participants to be bold, take up space and resist the temptation to shrink themselves because of fear or self-doubt.

Drawing on the message “Be Bold. Be You,” she encouraged participants to step forward even when they are uncertain or afraid.

Her message reinforced the idea that courage is not necessarily the absence of fear; sometimes, courage is choosing to move forward despite it.

Beyond the Job Title

The panel discussion turned attention to the rapidly changing world of work and challenged professionals and young people to continuously develop themselves.

Among the issues discussed was the growing influence of artificial intelligence and other emerging trends. Participants were encouraged to understand new technologies, challenge themselves, continue learning and remain adaptable rather than resist change.

The panel also challenged participants to think beyond their job titles.

A successful career, the discussion suggested, should not be measured solely by the position a person occupies, but also by the problems they solve, the people they influence and the impact they create through their work.

UGX 3 Million Raised for Education in Otuke

The evening’s message about impact also translated into practical action.

A total of UGX 3 million was raised and donated to the Kitabu-Buk Project Foundation, which works to improve access to books and educational materials.

The contribution will be used to provide textbooks and scholastic materials to St. Barnabas Primary School in Otuke District, with the handover scheduled for 25 September 2026.

The initiative creates a direct connection between the celebration of authorship and the promotion of literacy. While the launch celebrated the publication of one person’s story, part of its impact will be to put books and learning materials into the hands of children who need them.

For Ebal, this reflects the wider vision behind Law, Life & Laughter: storytelling should not end with inspiration or conversation but should, where possible, translate into meaningful action that improves the lives of others.

Challenging Perceptions About Who Can Be an Author

The publication also carries a broader message about young Ugandans documenting their own stories.

Traditionally, memoirs can be associated with people looking back on long careers or lives already lived. Law, Life & Laughter takes a different approach: it documents lessons while the author herself is still learning, growing and building.

It makes the case that authorship is not reserved for a particular age or stage of life.

Young professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders and creatives do not have to wait until retirement or until they believe they have achieved everything before documenting experiences that could help somebody else.

The value of a story does not necessarily come from the age of the person telling it, but from the honesty of the experience and the lessons it can offer others.

A Book, But Also a Conversation

The launch ultimately became more than the unveiling of a new publication. It created an intergenerational platform for conversations about faith, resilience, courage, technology, leadership, service and purposeful living.

For the young people in the room, the messages from the different speakers converged around a common challenge: keep going, keep learning, have faith, embrace change, learn from those who have travelled ahead of you, use your talents for good and make your life count beyond yourself.

The book may have brought people into the room, but its larger ambition is to keep those conversations going long after the launch.

And with 100 books purchased by Hon. Sylvia Alinaitwe and UGX 3 million already directed towards textbooks and scholastic materials for children in Otuke, the evening demonstrated that the impact of a story can extend well beyond its pages.

Perhaps the question posed during the evening best captures that ambition: How many people’s lives will be better because you were here?  The book can be purchased at www.lawlifelaughter.com.
