Fresh behind-the-scenes claims suggest that former Jinja Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Eric Sakwa could be among names under consideration as President Y.K Museveni reportedly weighs appointments for his 2026-2031 term.
Sources familiar with internal political discussions say that Sakwa’s name has quietly resurfaced in the ongoing but discreet vetting process for potential Cabinet and senior government positions. While there is no official confirmation, it’s indicated that conversations around his suitability have gained traction in recent weeks.
According to these sources, part of the momentum behind Sakwa’s potential appointment is linked to his record while serving as RDC in Jinja, where he built a reputation as an assertive enforcer against corruption and land grabbing.
Those pushing his name reportedly argue that his track record aligns with Museveni’s long-standing public stance on fighting corruption, as they say that he stood out as one of the few young leaders who took bold action, and that Sakwa’s work in Busoga left a lasting impression among both political actors and ordinary residents.
Sakwa, who hails from the Bugisu sub-region, is also said to be benefiting from arguments around regional balance and generational renewal within government. Some reportedly view him as part of a group of relatively younger cadres who could be brought into higher office to energize the administration.
His academic background has also been cited by those backing him, pointing to hos recently acquired to his Master’s Degree of Science in Environment and Natural Resources (Makerere University), alongside a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, a diploma in Secondary Education from Kyambogo University, and additional training in administrative law from Makerere University, as credentials that position him well for national leadership.
Beyond qualifications, mobilization ability is another factor reportedly working in Sakwa’s favor. During his time in Jinja, he was widely known for grassroots engagement, earning a reputation among supporters as a regional RDC due to his influence across the wider Busoga sub-region. Insiders say his ability to coordinate security operations and monitor government programs beyond his immediate jurisdiction built confidence among both local leaders and sections of the public.
There are also claims that his perceived popularity among ordinary citizens could play into his consideration. Sources describe him as a leader who projected himself as working for the common person, particularly through actions against alleged corruption in public institutions, including land offices, schools, and health facilities.
However, Sakwa’s past has not been without controversy. His tenure as RDC was marked by clashes with some local political leaders, and he has previously faced legal challenges, which his supporters often attribute to pushback from individuals affected by his anti-corruption stance. Critics, on the other hand, have questioned aspects of his methods while in office.
Despite these mixed views, insiders say his name continues to feature in state house discussions, with some suggesting that early leaks of potential appointees are sometimes used to test public reaction and give shape to internal decision-making.
Efforts to obtain a direct comment from Sakwa were not immediately successful as his known phone number was unreachable, but sources close to him indicate that the firebrand yellow cadre remains ready to serve if called upon.
