Day Two of the Cohort 5 Equity Leaders Program (ELP) Bootcamp at the Africa Bible University, Lubowa featured a series of insightful sessions aimed at shaping Uganda’s next generation of purpose-driven leaders. The week-long program has brought together 100 outstanding scholars from across the country, selected as the top boy and girl from each district where Equity Bank Uganda operates, based on their UACE results.

Claver Serumaga, Executive Director of Equity Bank Uganda, opened the day by likening organizations to football teams, explaining that defenders, midfielders, and strikers all play a crucial role and that when one part fails, the entire system is affected. He emphasized that true leadership involves understanding how the different parts connect, not just how they perform individually, underscoring the importance of collaboration and holistic leadership.

Richard Muraguri, Head of Finance and Administration, shared his personal journey and encouraged the scholars to stay grounded in their identity, trust in God’s purpose, take bold steps, resist pressure to conform, and remain open to learning from others. He also reminded them that the future of work favors those who can solve problems.

Self-leadership was another key focus of the day. Lindah N. Tibasiima, Manager of the Regional Trade Desk, guided the scholars on the importance of self-awareness, self-management, self-motivation, and personal responsibility as drivers of both personal and professional growth.

In a session on marketing and communications, Clare Tumwesigye, Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, discussed how trust, perception, and crisis management influence brands, growth, and leadership in the digital era. Meanwhile, Frank Balabyeki, Head of Risk Management, engaged the scholars in an interactive discussion on risk and fraud, highlighting the principles they must uphold while serving ethically at Equity Bank.

The program continues to provide a strong foundation for scholars to develop into leaders capable of transforming their communities. Program organizers emphasized that while every journey to success begins with a single step, the right environment significantly determines how far that journey can go.

This year’s 100 scholars join 412 others already studying at various universities, continuing a legacy of nurturing exceptional talent committed to leadership, service, and societal impact.
