This Wednesday, as MPs gathered to pay tribute to the fallen Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, Anita Among seemed prepared to grab the moment and use it to somehow get back to her re-election biggest challenger Norbert Mao.
The DP President/Justice Minister had used his Tuesday news conference in Kampala the previous day to verbally destroy both the DP Secretary General Gerald Siranda and Anita Among who he branded the ‘flag bearer of corruption’ in the Speakership race. He said many uncharitable things about Anita Among who must have taken offence-because the gloves were clearly off as the renowned wordsmith from Laroo-Pece threw everything, he could at her during that media event that lasted not less than 3 hours.
The media event was dedicated to justifying and amplifying his Speakership bid in the aftermath of the just-ended NRM caucus retreat at Kyankwanzi. At the Wednesday Nakimuli tribute-paying event, Among seemed determined to elevate the status and the significancy of Gerald Siranda while massaging his ego.
In her opening remarks, Anita Among made reference to a written condolence message from the Arusha-based Legislative Assembly and attributed the authorship of the letter to Siranda who isn’t known to hold any big leadership role at EALA.
She proceeded to read another written condolence from IPOD, which too was signed off by the same Gerald Siranda, who currently heads the organ comprising of all Secretaries Generals for IPOD member parties.
Among also went on to recognize another written condolence from DP, as a sister opposition party to NUP to which Nakimuli belonged. She announced that this written message from DP had equally been signed off by Siranda in his capacity as DP SG.
She further acted in a very complementary manner towards the same Gerald Siranda when it came to introducing other MPs-elect present in the gallery. When introducing the EALA members present, Among started with Siranda, a thing that must have made the DP secretary general to fill important and powerful.
Norbert Mao was nowhere to be seem and yet all this repeated referencing of Siranda, without any mention of his boss and mentor, under whom he serves both in IPOD and DP, created uneasiness among people from the Norbert Mao universe who were present.
It’s widely expected that Siranda is going to easily secure re-election as one of Uganda’s 9 EALA representatives come next year and continue eating things at Arusha in the name of DP, whether Mao (who currently is very angry with him for backing Anita Among) likes it or now.
And Siranda being the shrewd political actors he is, rightly realizes that as of now, it’s Anita Among who he needs to secure re-election for second term, and not Norbert Mao.
