Gen MK’s endorsement of Hon Oboth-Oboth as the next Speaker of Parliament has widely been welcomed as very relieving news by thousands of Ugandans whose view is that change of leadership at Parliament was long overdue.
Gen MK, who many have since christened Gen Museveni’s co-President, has gone as far as signaling that Oboth-Oboth will have to be deputized by a lady, a thing that has bred speculation that this might be Counsel Parsis Namuganza, Dr. Lillian Aber, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng or Lydia Wanyoto.
Reliable sources have indicated that over the weekend, Gen Museveni, who these days is deliberately very consultative and inclusive on especially the Speakership issue, has scheduled a one on one meeting with the Laroo-Pece MP Norbert Mao.
It’s widely understood that he will be using the meeting to get Mao, whose bid had created a lot of momentum among disgruntled Ugandans, buy into the Oboth-Oboth choice or even accept to serve as Deputy Speaker. In the alternative, he would be lobbied to market the new decision among his Acholi co-ethnics while personally preparing to be reappointed back to Cabinet but in a much higher position than the Justice Ministry one he had been holding.
Mao’s wife Beatrice in a Friday social media post indicated she is satisfied and proud of her man over the fearlessness with which he belled the cat, namely calling out Anita Among at a time only him could risk doing so. Until Gen MK came up and started firing artillery pieces off his X handle, many feared calling out Among who had created the impression she was a very powerful person. Indeed, many who dared call her out had to contend with very painful consequences. Examples include Theodore Sekikubo, Parsis Namuganza, Francis Zzaake, Deputy AG Jackson Kafuzi etc.
Beatrice is of the view that all this momentum has resulted from the fires which her hubby Mao deliberately ignited weeks ago, under his one man’s army slogan, prompting many to predict he was going to end up badly. Beatrice, who has profound influence on Mao, seemed satisfied that at least it won’t be Anita Among from whom plenty of retribution had been expected, to Mao’s detriment, in case she bounced back as Speaker. The President intends to use the weekend engagement to harmonize things and find plenty of common ground with his new political ally Norbert Mao.
