A move to repair the sculpture of the long-horned Ankole Bull, stationed at Mbarara roundabout has angered area leaders. Many of them argue that the plan was to have a new monument and not to undertake repairs on the damaged art. Known locally as ‘Aha Mahembe Gente’, the sculpture is meant to stand out as the landmark feature of Ankole. But the iconic monument had been replaced with metallic effigies with a semblance of the Ankole Bull, causing a public uproar.

The new design which was erected as part of the beautification program under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development – (USMID) project, was described as a displeasing appearance. The uproar saw the authorities move in to demolish the metals that had been placed right in front of the Bull, which had lost one of its horns and fourth leg. However, works to have the traditional bull restored are already underway. But the move has sparked off bitter reactions from the local leaders who argue that the municipal authorities have defied the council resolution to have a new and better bull in place.
Kakoma Ward Councilor Robert Bushweta says that the renovation was not part of what they agreed upon. He says that authorities should instead demolish the old bull and ensure that the beauty of Mbarara is not compromised. Katete ward Councilor Imam Kagiiko told URN that the move to do repairs on the dilapidated bull is a sign of mediocrity on the side of the top leadership in Mbarara municipality. Kagiiko says that the leaders took a clear stand and that this has been ignored by the authorities. Bright Muhumuza, a resident of Mbarara town says that the failure to facilitate the procurement of a new bull is a signal that area leaders cannot be trusted. But Mbarara Municipality Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi says that the renovation works are aimed at having the old bull in shape as they prepare for replacement soon.
