On Saturday, Yusuf Nsibambi the FDC whip in Parliament and the MP for Mawokota South appeared on CBS radio’s Parliament Yaffe. He spoke about his recent meeting with President Museveni to whom he took other peripheral opposition leaders for some talks, which he says were aimed at de-escalating political tensions in the country.
Nsibambi said he doesn’t want opposition to get stuck duping people how Museveni rigged the 2026 poll. He says that can’t be substantiated because Museveni properly won a free and fair elections.
He says that instead, the contradictions in opposition groups are the ones which need to be addressed as opposed to leaders wasting time going in hiding and deceiving supporters how their win was stolen.
Nsibambi was prompted by the moderator Dr. Samuel Kazibwe to explain as to why he was contradicting his FDC Party Presidential Candidate Nandala Mafabi who days earlier had called a news conference and declared EC Chairman Simon Byabakama a thief who deserves to be in prison.
In his response, Nsibambi said Nandala was being merely deceptive and dishonest in his claims. He wondered why anyone should believe that Nandala Mafabi, who kept getting zeros at many polling stations, was a victim of any vote rigging.
“Museveni gets 400 votes and you get zeros and then you go saying my win was stolen. We could listen to you if you had 100 votes where he had 400,” Nsibambi said in his contemptuous response to Nandala Mafabi who he doesn’t seem to fear anymore.
He said he will be concentrating on his Peace & Reconciliation forum or platform through which he said he will be convening regular intellectual discussions and town hall meetings to popularize the need to engage and keep talking with Museveni in order to de-escalate tensions and improve the quality of governance and service delivery in Uganda.
Contradicting Nandala Mafabi, for whom he never campaigned, will predictably create problems for Nsibambi inside FDC party where he currently serves as Deputy President. He is actually going to be expelled as the Najjanankumbi party struggles to overcome publicity problems resulting from Nsibambi’s controversial State House meetings.
