The construction of the Lubya hill-based Cathedral which according to the Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga, the Archbishop of Orthodox Church in Uganda It is expected to be a replica of Hagia Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople will cost about $4.5m (about Shs17bn).
Before pronouncing his donation in pledge, the Orthodox had revealed to the President that the construction of the cathedral is in commemoration of 100 years.

President Museveni who was the chief guest at the commemoration of 100 years of the evangelical mission of the Orthodox church in Uganda, asked the religious leaders to rally their followers to boost their household incomes through commercial activities including agriculture, services, ICT and industries.
Besides the Shs300m pledge for construction of the church, Museveni further contributed Shs80m to the church members’ SACCO and another Shs20m to the Orthodox priests’ SACCO.
He further excited the Orthodox by pledging that he will use his diplomatic relations to lobby for more funds towards the construction of the church across the orthodox fraternity.
Museveni said that the church members can no longer fund the construction of the church without a helping hand because they have insisted on substance farming which has crippled them financially. He contended that people can only finance the construction of the church only if they are economically empowered. For comments, call or text us on 0752510225.
