The opposition JEEMA political party, has lashed at the government saying that it has been able to intimidate the media and displayed excessive force against the opposition but failed to address the insecurity in the country.
JEEMA attributes the insecurity occurrences in the country on political instability adding that it is a sign of a failing regime. In a press release issued today at the party headquarters in Mengo on Monday May 6th,2019, stated that there is growing insecurity in all parts of Uganda though the low-profile ones are not covered.
JEEMA says that whereas only the high-profile murders get media coverage, murders of less known citizens are an everyday occurrence meaning that the regime has failed to protect its citizens’ life and property.
“We have received reports that media houses have been intimidated by security not to report murders widely and we condemn this in a strongest manner, “stated the press release.
JEEMA’s release also stated that with show of force the government displays against the opposition on a daily basis, and the thousands of government spies that roam the streets and countryside, it is hard to imagine that this insecurity is not happening under the watch of the regime.
It adds that the regime has either failed in its duty, or it is complicit in the perpetuation of insecurity for political reasons, by using fear as a tool of control.
It further read that: “The cowardly regime must admit that it has completely failed to protect Ugandans and their property and the sooner regime change occurs, the better.”
JEEMA officials who also urged the Uganda communications commission and security forces harassing media in the country, condemned the government actions of denying opposition political leaders’ access to radio and TV stations in the country. They noted that that the opposition is now a united force and that any attack on one of them is an attack to all of them.
“There is a growing sense of comradeship, and as events of the past weeks show, it is getting clear that the opposition is united in its emphasis that “an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us”. We commit to continue with that role until all opposition forces are focused on defeating the dictatorship, whether through popular civic action or through an election, or both,” reads part of the press release.
