Following the confession of a security guard that he killed Dr. Cathy Agaba, of International Hospital Kampala, the Police have challenged Ugandans to be very cautious when recruiting guards.
Dr. Agaba’s body was retrieved by police and Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) in a septic tank allegedly killed by the security guard, Ronald Obangakene, at her rented premises, at Kalungu Road, Muyenga, in Kampala City.
Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesperson says that the public should not recruit guards whose background, work experiences and training records are not known.
According to Enanga, Obangakene was handpicked by landlord Hajji Ibrahim Kiwanuka without conducting due diligence on who he was.
“We also want to appeal to all landlords and property owners, to ensure thorough vetting and background checks are conducted before hiring security guards. In this instance, the suspect was handpicked, as a local guard, without undergoing any rigorous background checks, and training on guard duties and related responsibilities,” Enanga says.
Enanga insists that Dr Agaba’s murder was a premeditated and straight forward case of murder, with revenge and theft as the motivation. Police base its argument on the fact that Obangakene was found in possession of Dr Agaba’s property among others a phone, home theatre, TV screen and woofers.
Police have since used Agaba’s murder to remind people to always be vigilant wherever they are since she was killed within a perimeter wall. Enanga says police will continue partnering with the community to promote target hardening initiatives like; private CCTV cameras, formal patrols, use of phone trees, Whatsapp platforms and use of environmental designs, because of the positive impact they make in securing our communities.
