The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Databank (NAGRC & DB) has emerged as the best government agency at the 32nd National Agricultural Show in Jinja, capping a week of exhibitions, farmer engagement and conversations about the future of Uganda’s livestock sector.
The recognition came as the annual agricultural gathering drew to a close, bringing together farmers, government agencies, agribusinesses, researchers and members of the public to showcase innovations and services aimed at improving agricultural production.
For NAGRC & DB, the award was a notable highlight of its participation in the show, where the institution engaged farmers and visitors on animal genetic resources and livestock development.
The closing programme featured a Farmers’ Dialogue presided over by Bright Rwamirama, Minister of State for Animal Industry. The official closure was officiated by Desire Muhoozi, Minister of State for Agriculture, representing Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Minister Frank Tumwebaze.
But beyond the awards and official speeches, the show offered an opportunity for farmers to put their questions directly to institutions working in agriculture.
For many visitors, agricultural exhibitions such as the Jinja show are more than displays of machinery, livestock and new technologies. They provide a rare meeting point where farmers can seek practical answers, learn about government programmes and discover approaches that could improve their livelihoods.
NAGRC & DB said its participation was made possible by the farmers, stakeholders, partners and visitors who interacted with its team throughout the exhibition.
The institution expressed appreciation for the engagement, describing the show as a successful platform for connecting with the people at the heart of Uganda’s agricultural economy.
The award also underscored the growing importance of institutions involved in animal breeding and genetic resource management as Uganda seeks to strengthen livestock productivity and support farmers.
As the crowds dispersed from the showgrounds in Jinja, the displays were packed away and the official programme came to an end. For NAGRC & DB, however, the biggest takeaway was not simply the trophy—it was the conversations with farmers whose everyday work gives meaning to Uganda’s agricultural ambitions.
