The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) has graduated 80 Artificial Insemination (AI) Technicians following a three-week intensive training aimed at strengthening the delivery of quality livestock breeding services across Uganda.
The graduation ceremony was held on 10 July 2026 at the National Artificial Insemination Training Centre, Ruhengyere Ranch in Kiruhura District, under the Uganda Climate Smart Agriculture Transformation Project (UCSATP).
The newly trained technicians constitute the project’s third cohort and were selected from 20 beneficiary districts representing Uganda’s major livestock production systems.
With the graduation of the latest cohort, the number of AI technicians trained under UCSATP has risen to 200, out of the project’s target of 288 technicians.
The training is part of efforts to address gaps in access to reliable and quality breeding services, particularly among livestock farmers in rural and hard-to-reach areas. By equipping technicians with specialised skills in artificial insemination, the programme is seeking to strengthen last-mile delivery of improved breeding services.
NAGRC&DB says the initiative will also contribute to expanding farmers’ access to superior livestock genetics, enabling them to improve the productivity and resilience of their herds.
Improved access to breeding services is expected to support farmers in producing animals that are better suited to changing climatic conditions while enhancing livestock production and creating opportunities for increased commercialisation.
The training and deployment of AI technicians therefore form part of broader interventions under UCSATP to transform Uganda’s livestock sector through climate-smart technologies, improved genetics and strengthened service delivery systems.
As the project moves towards its target of training 288 technicians, the growing network of trained personnel is expected to play a key role in bringing modern animal breeding services closer to livestock farmers across the country.
