The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) is strengthening agricultural education among schoolchildren through practical lessons on modern cattle breeding and management.
The initiative saw Primary Seven learners from Taibah International School visit NAGRC&DB’s National Bull Stud on July 15, 2026, where they were introduced to modern livestock breeding technologies and practices.
During the educational tour, the learners observed a demonstration of semen collection and visited the facility’s liquid nitrogen production plant. The activities offered the pupils an opportunity to see firsthand some of the technologies used to support artificial insemination and animal genetic improvement.
The engagement has since continued at the school’s Taibah Agrofest, where NAGRC&DB staff are supporting the P.7 Goldcrest class in presenting its “Cattle Rearing” exhibition.
The agency’s technical team is providing guidance to the learners as they explain modern cattle breeding and management practices to parents, fellow pupils and other visitors attending the event.
The collaboration is intended to bridge classroom learning with practical agricultural experience, giving learners a better understanding of how science and technology are being applied in livestock production.
Through the exhibitions and field visits, the pupils are being exposed to areas including animal breeding, cattle management and technologies that contribute to improved livestock productivity.
NAGRC&DB says such engagements are important in promoting practical agricultural learning while encouraging young people to view farming beyond traditional perceptions.
By introducing learners to modern cattle production systems at an early age, the programme also seeks to spark interest in agriculture as a potential career and business opportunity.
The school-based initiative highlights the growing role of experiential learning in preparing young people to understand and participate in Uganda’s agricultural sector.
For NAGRC&DB, working directly with learners provides an opportunity to share technical knowledge while creating awareness about the importance of animal genetic resources and improved breeding practices to the country’s livestock industry.
