It has been revealed that the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru was preparing to return home from hospital when he died, having told people close to him that doctors were expected to discharge him the following day.
The painful revelation was made on Saturday ahead of the his burial, where the official statement was read by Baguma Komwiswa, Head of Protocol in Tooro Kingdom
Komwiswa said that Oyo remained hopeful and was looking forward to coming home after his treatment in the United States, and that the King spoke to Jonathan Baguma and also talked to some of his close associates and servants, assuring them that he would return home the following day.
“He spoke to Batereze Mary and Philip, assuring them that he was coming home the next day when the doctors were planning to discharge him,” the statement read by Komwiswa said.
However, the Omukama never came home.
His condition suddenly deteriorated on August 27, 2026, and doctors placed him on life support as they tried to save his life.
Their efforts, according to Komwiswa, failed and the King was pronounced dead at exactly 14:16 hours US time, at only 34 years of age.
Until the final day, Oyo had remained hopeful about his recovery. The statement described him as strong, in high spirits and confident that he would overcome his illness, saying he was eating well, communicating and praying regularly.
Even while in hospital, the King remained in touch with his people in Tooro, speaking to key palace workers and security personnel and giving instructions on the management of kingdom affairs.
His final conversations, according to Komwiswa’s statement, carried the expectation of a homecoming that never happened. Instead of receiving their King back from hospital, Tooro Kingdom was left preparing to receive his remains.
