The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has commended MTN Uganda for consistently fulfilling its statutory obligations, describing the company’s contribution to the sector as more than a regulatory requirement, but a shared investment in Uganda’s national development.
Speaking on the contribution, the UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo noted that MTN Uganda’s remittance of UGX 54.27 billion through the statutory 2% levy on annual gross revenue represents an increase from the previous year and reflects the continued growth and strength of Uganda’s communications sector.
He described the contribution as a strong demonstration of corporate citizenship and a reflection of the partnership between the regulator and licensed communications operators in advancing Uganda’s digital transformation agenda.
The funds generated through the levy play an important role in supporting ICT skills development through the Uganda Institute of Information and Communication Technology (UICT), while also contributing to the expansion of reliable communications services to unserved and underserved communities across the country.
These investments are particularly important in areas where extending communications infrastructure may not be commercially viable, helping to bridge the digital divide and expand access to essential communication services for more Ugandans.
While acknowledging that payment of the levy is a licence obligation for operators, UCC commended MTN Uganda for the consistency, timeliness and good faith with which it continues to fulfil the responsibility.
Thembo noted that MTN’s approach demonstrates an understanding that regulatory obligations can also contribute meaningfully to national development when embraced as part of a broader commitment to society.
He said the contribution aligns with UCC’s vision of a fully Connected Uganda by 2030, in which citizens across the country can access reliable communications services and participate meaningfully in the digital economy.
The partnership between UCC and licensed operators remains central to achieving this vision. Through regulatory compliance, investment in infrastructure and support for digital skills development, the communications sector continues to play a critical role in Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
UCC’s recognition of MTN Uganda therefore underscores the importance of responsible corporate citizenship and collective action in advancing digital inclusion. The Commission encouraged continued collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that the benefits of Uganda’s growing digital economy reach all communities, including those in underserved and commercially challenging areas.
