NWSC Strikes Water Gold in Kiryandongo-Bweyale as New Boreholes Set to End Supply Woes

Water supply improvement works by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) in Kiryandongo and Bweyale have entered a critical phase, with the completion of new boreholes expected to significantly boost production capacity and provide a lasting solution to persistent water supply challenges in the area.

The ongoing works form part of NWSC’s long-term interventions to strengthen water reliability in Kiryandongo District, where growing demand from households, institutions and businesses has increased pressure on existing supply systems.

Senior Manager Operations – Central, Eng. Moses Bigabwa, inspected the project sites on Thursday this week to assess progress and ensure that implementation remains on schedule.

At Kiryandongo II, drilling of a new borehole has been successfully completed, marking an important milestone in expanding the area’s water production capacity. The new motorized borehole will soon operate alongside the existing facility, allowing both sources to run concurrently and improve the reliability of supply.

NWSC officials said the additional production capacity will help reduce service interruptions and ensure more consistent water availability for communities served by the system.

In Kikube, another new motorized borehole has been completed as part of efforts to increase available water resources. A 1.5-kilometre pumping main has been designed to connect the new borehole to the existing water supply network.

Procurement of pipes for the connection is currently underway, while preparations for construction of a booster station are progressing. Land negotiations for the booster station have already been concluded, with construction set to begin after the completion of compensation processes.

At Bweyale, drilling works being undertaken by Simadra are also advancing steadily, with early assessments showing promising groundwater prospects. The drilling is expected to be completed by Sunday, after which further development of the water source will proceed.

NWSC projects that the entire intervention will be commissioned by September 30, 2026, following completion of remaining activities, including infrastructure installation, connections and system testing.

The upgrades are expected to substantially increase water production, improve operational efficiency and enhance the reliability of supply across Kiryandongo and Bweyale.

The investment reflects NWSC’s continued focus on developing sustainable water infrastructure that addresses current demand while preparing for future growth in emerging urban centres.

Beyond increasing access to safe water, the improved system is expected to support better public health outcomes, enhance livelihoods and provide a stronger foundation for economic activities in the district.

By expanding production capacity through new groundwater sources and strengthening existing networks, NWSC aims to deliver a more resilient water supply system that minimizes disruptions and provides communities with dependable access to clean and safe water.
