As Uganda’s diaspora continues to send record remittances back home, Equity Bank Uganda is stepping up efforts to help transform these financial inflows into long-term investments that create businesses, jobs and sustainable wealth.
On Saturday, August 1, the bank will host the latest edition of its Equity Diaspora Webinar Series, a virtual platform designed to equip Ugandans living abroad with practical knowledge, expert insights and tailored financial solutions to invest confidently in Uganda.
The session will feature Bank of Uganda Deputy Governor Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, who is expected to share insights on the growing role of diaspora investment in accelerating Uganda’s economic transformation. Interested participants can register through http://shorturl.at/VKA8A.
The webinar comes at a time when Uganda’s diaspora is playing an increasingly important role in the country’s economy. According to official figures, remittance inflows reached a record US$2.5 billion (about Shs9.3 trillion) in 2025, contributing approximately 3.8 percent of Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
While these funds continue to support millions of households through education, healthcare, housing and other day-to-day expenses, Equity Bank believes they also present a significant opportunity to finance productive sectors such as commercial agriculture, manufacturing, real estate and small businesses.
Through the webinar series, the bank is encouraging Ugandans abroad to look beyond remittances as a means of family support and instead view them as capital that can generate long-term wealth and contribute to national development.
The initiative also reflects Equity Bank Uganda’s broader strategy of positioning itself as more than a money transfer provider. By combining digital banking with personalised financial advisory services, the bank is helping diaspora customers save, invest and manage their financial interests in Uganda from anywhere in the world.
Having the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda lead this weekend’s discussion underscores the growing national focus on harnessing diaspora capital as a key driver of economic growth. The conversation is expected to explore how sound policy, financial innovation and secure digital banking can unlock even greater investment opportunities for Ugandans abroad.
The webinar also builds on Equity Bank Uganda’s growing recognition in diaspora banking. Earlier this year, the bank was named Corporate Business of the Year at the African Business Chamber (AfBC) African Business Awards 2026 in London, in recognition of its contribution to financial inclusion, cross-border banking, trade facilitation and diaspora investment across Africa.
Ultimately, the Equity Diaspora Webinar Series aims to empower Ugandans abroad to do more than send money home. It seeks to provide them with the knowledge, confidence and financial tools to make informed investment decisions that build lasting wealth for their families while supporting Uganda’s broader economic transformation.(For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
