By Ben Musanje

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) joined the nationwide National Cleaning Day campaign, with its management and staff participating in community cleaning activities in Nakawa as part of efforts to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.

The exercise followed a directive by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja designating Saturday, July 25, 2026, as Uganda’s inaugural National Cleaning Day, a monthly initiative aimed at improving sanitation, preventing hygiene-related diseases and fostering civic responsibility.

A team of URA management and staff, led by the Assistant Commissioner for Public and Corporate Affairs, Robert Kalumba, took part in cleaning roads and public spaces from the tax body’s offices to Nakawa Market in Sentamu Kavule LC1 Zone.

The exercise involved clearing litter, sweeping roadsides and cleaning drainage channels in support of the government’s campaign to improve sanitation standards in communities across the country.

Speaking on behalf of the institution, URA Commissioner General John R. Musinguzi said the Authority’s participation was intended to reaffirm its commitment to building a cleaner and healthier nation.

Musinguzi emphasized that good health is a prerequisite for national development, noting that only a healthy population can effectively contribute to Uganda’s ambition of growing the economy to US$500 billion.

He said the National Cleaning Day initiative provides an opportunity for public institutions, the private sector and communities to work together in creating cleaner environments while promoting responsible waste management practices.

The government’s National Cleaning Day programme requires Ugandans to dedicate the last Saturday of every month to cleaning homes, markets, workplaces and public spaces as part of efforts to reduce sanitation-related diseases and improve environmental health.

The initiative is coordinated by the Office of the Prime Minister in collaboration with ministries, local governments and other government agencies.

URA’s participation reflects growing support from public institutions for the nationwide campaign, with officials expressing hope that regular community clean-up exercises will help improve public health, protect the environment and contribute to sustainable socio-economic development.

The Authority also encouraged Ugandans to embrace cleanliness as a shared responsibility, stressing that maintaining a healthy environment is essential for improving productivity, enhancing the quality of life and supporting the country’s long-term development goals.
