The President of the republic of Uganda,Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will this Saturday join the people of Nakasero, Kampala in a cleaning exercise as government officially launches a new National Cleaning Day, to be conducted every last Saturday of every month, aimed at improving sanitation across the country.
The exercise will mark the start of a 2025 Cabinet decision that set aside the day for the people of Uganda to clean their homes, streets, markets and other public places.
This was revealed on the night of Thursday by the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Justine Kasule Lumumba, in a TV appearance, where she said that Vice President Jessica Alupo will officially launch the programme, while President Y.K Museveni will personally take part in the clean-up in Nakasero.
“It was passed in Cabinet in 2025 that the last Saturdays of the month be National Cleaning Day. The launch is this Saturday and will be presided over by H.E. Jessica Alupo. President Museveni will be cleaning in Nakasero,” Lumumba said.
She explained that the programme is meant to bring Ugandans together to keep their communities clean instead of leaving everything to local governments.
Lumumba also announced that beginning next month, markets across the country will be cleaned on the last Friday of every month, one day before the National Cleaning Day, adding that government made the decision after finding that many markets are in poor sanitary conditions.
According to her, improving cleanliness in markets and communities will help protect people’s health while creating a better environment for everyone.
She called on Ugandans to support the initiative, saying sanitation is everyone’s responsibility and not just the work of government officials.
While Museveni himself is expected to lead the first exercise in Nakasero, the government hopes the monthly clean-up campaign will encourage more people to take part in keeping their surroundings clean.
