NWSC Rolls Out Major Water Supply Upgrade for Wakiso Communities as Planned Power Outage Disrupts Service

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has announced plans to expand and improve water supply infrastructure in several rapidly growing areas of Wakiso District, promising better water pressure, increased reliability and wider access for thousands of residents once the projects are completed.

In a customer advisory issued on Monday (July 13,2026) NWSC said hydrological surveys have already been successfully completed in Nabingo, Kasenge and surrounding areas, marking a significant step towards implementing new water supply interventions.

The utility said it is now engaging landowners in negotiations to secure land required for the next phase of infrastructure development.

According to NWSC, the planned projects are intended to address persistent water supply challenges experienced by residents in the affected areas, many of which have witnessed rapid population growth and increasing demand for clean and reliable water.

Under the proposed interventions, the Nabingo water supply project will serve the wider Greater Nabingo area, including Bataka I and II, Kyigwanya, Nabingo Trinity and neighbouring communities.

Similar projects are also planned for Maya, Nakirama, Kasenge and Kyambazi. The Maya scheme is expected to improve water services throughout the Maya area, while the Kasenge-Nakirama project will benefit residents of Nakirama, Kasenge and parts of Nakawuka Road.

NWSC said the infrastructure investments are designed to improve water pressure, enhance the reliability of supply and increase access for both households and businesses.

“We kindly ask for your patience and continued support as we engage the landowners and advance this important project. Updates will be shared as progress is made,” the corporation said in its advisory.

The announcement comes as residents in parts of Wakiso and Kampala metropolitan areas experienced temporary water supply disruptions caused by a planned electricity shutdown.

NWSC said the interruption follows a scheduled power outage by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) on Monday, July 13, affecting the Mityana Road power line.

The shutdown temporarily affected operations at the Bulenga Booster Station, one of the key facilities responsible for pumping water to several communities along the Mityana Road corridor and neighbouring areas.

Areas affected by the temporary water interruption include Nakabugo, Zion Estates, Bulenga, Kireka, Kikaaya, Gogonya, Nakuwadde Upper, Kalambi Jomayi, Bulaga, Kalambi, Kasasa, Kangalama, Ganda, Kisamula, Buyala, Kasero, Kapeeka, Nabuzinga, Lower Kiwumu, Tomi, Kirimamboga, Buloba Upper, Bukasa, Bukulu, Kigoma, Bwotansimbi, Temangalo, Bukasa Lukwanga Road, Kiwumu Upper and other surrounding communities along the Mityana Road corridor.

The outage also affected customers in the Wakiso and Kakiri corridor, including Kayunga, Kasangombe, Kasengeje, Gombe, Mpunga, Wakiso District Headquarters, Wakiso Town Council, Wakiso Centre, Kyoga Banda, Kakunyu, Mende, Kakiri, Kikumbampanga, Nkoowe, Kavumba, Sala, Buyera, Muyomba and Kona.

Additional interruptions were reported in the Nasansa corridor, covering areas such as Gganda Nasere, Kireka-Biira, Kabulengwa, Naluvule, parts of Ssenge, Bujjuko, Kadebedde, Kamu, Kawoko, Gombe Kitasa, Kyebando Nsumbi, Kyebando-Kyamuka and Kayunga.

NWSC said electricity supply is expected to be restored after 5:00 p.m., allowing its technical teams to immediately resume pumping operations.

The corporation noted that water supply would normalize progressively after power is restored, as it takes time for reservoirs to refill and pressure to stabilize across the distribution network.

NWSC apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the planned interruption and encouraged residents to follow its official communication channels for real-time updates.

The utility said the ongoing infrastructure expansion, coupled with improvements to the existing distribution network, forms part of its broader strategy to meet growing demand for water services in Wakiso District and the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, where rapid urbanization continues to place increasing pressure on existing water supply systems.
