In the days leading up to their dramatic arrest on Thursday, Chris Obore and the other seven top officials from the Parliament of Uganda had been given the impression there was nothing serious to be worried about and that the IGG investigators were moving towards letting them off the hook.
On Wednesday, the group had appeared at the same IG, which is just across the road from Parliament, their place of work, and were treated so cordially by investigators to the extent that they were even served some drinks and eats. The investigators even cracked jokes with them, while signaling how there was nothing to be worried about.
As they left, they were told they would briefly be called back Thursday, the next day, for a brief interaction whereafter the investigations would be halted after all there wasn’t much for them to have to answer for and explain themselves about. On Thursday, they were signaled to turn up at the IGG offices to bring the matter to the conclusion as had been signaled and promised the previous day.
Naturally, because any human being would be relieved being aided to move towards bringing such very scaring investigations to an end, so that you plan on how to plunge into the new life (post-inquiry), the eight mobilized themselves and quickly crossed the road and returned to the IG premises.
On arrival, they were served tea and some other drinks and this made them to become totally relaxed. As they sipped the tea, someone they hadn’t been used to walked in and announced “gentlemen I’m here to inform you, that you are under arrest.” This was followed by a photographer from the IG media unit who immediately began taking photos as the eight sweated plasma, unable to come to terms with the bad news that had just been delivered to them.
Sources say that the Inspectorate opted for this approach of calming down their target because they didn’t want to endure operational complications that would come with having to hunt any of the 8 officials down because these are great men with means to attempt escape which would have cost the IG and also created more drama.
Sources now say there will be more arrests in the coming days and that Joseph Sabiiti, the former Press Secretary to Anita Among, is among those investigators are increasingly becoming interested in. Apart from the back bench Commissioners who shared the Shs1.7bn as a token of appreciation, the likes of Asuman Basalirwa, Richard Sebamala, Mugema Panadol and some Parliamentary Sacco officials etc are some of the other persons of interest to the investigators at the IG.
