Johannesburg, South Africa-The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has earned continental recognition after its Manager, Litigation and Legal Advisory Services, Ms. Brownie Ebal, was named Runner-Up at the inaugural Legal Innovation & Impact Awards 2026 held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The prestigious awards were presented during the Legal Innovation Summit 2026, one of Africa’s leading forums on legal innovation and institutional transformation. The summit brought together legal leaders, corporate executives, governance experts and technology innovators from across the continent to discuss the future of legal practice under the theme Connect, Co-Create, Innovate.
The awards attracted more than 1,000 nominations and were adjudicated by an independent panel of 11 international judges. Among the initiatives recognised were the digitisation of legal and property records, integration of legal services into management decision making and innovative legal enforcement that has strengthened the protection of public water infrastructure. Working with the Utilities Court, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Uganda Police Force and other agencies, NWSC has enhanced prosecution of offences such as illegal water connections, vandalism, theft of Corporation assets and utility fraud.
Also, the corporation’s community Legal Aid Clinics were also recognised for promoting legal awareness, improving compliance and strengthening engagement with customers and communities. Remarkably, these innovations have contributed to a 99% litigation success rate, a 94–100% conviction rate in utilities related prosecutions, improved protection of public assets, enhanced operational efficiency and stronger corporate governance.
Commenting on the achievement, Senior Manager Legal, Ms. Patricia Magara, congratulated Ms. Ebal and the Legal Services Department for the outstanding recognition. She thanked NWSC Management, led by the Managing Director, Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha, for creating an enabling environment that empowers staff to innovate and excel, while championing women leadership and equal opportunities within the Corporation.
Ms. Magara also commended Eng. Mahmood Lutaaya for his exemplary stewardship of the Legal team, noting that his humble, selfless and steady leadership has greatly contributed to the department’s growth and continental recognition.
NWSC congratulates Ms. Brownie Ebal and the entire legal team on this remarkable achievement, which further reinforces the Corporation’s commitment to innovation, good governance and excellence in public service.
