In his latest newspaper column, older persons’ MP Ofwono Opondo veiledly criticized Gen MK, the CDF, for subjecting Erias Lukwago to dehumanizing treatment and going ahead to publicly brag about it. Opondo, fearless as always, implied that such conduct was reminiscent of dictator Idi Amin’s era.
Opondo also said the above impugned acts diluted the well-intentioned resolutions reached during the just-ended Cabinet retreat and also had the effect of creating PR problems for the GoU.
However, the former government spokesman heaped a lot more blame on Justice & Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao who he demanded to know why he was being silent yet matters of Lukwago-like torture directly fall under his Cabinet docket.
Opondo speculated that Mao was either too comfortable with being a Minister and is determined to keep his position and remain silent or his indifference is being informed by his personal hatred for Erias Lukwago who for long belonged to a rival faction inside DP.
On Sunday, DP elder Kennedy Mutenyo who is always out to rabidly defend his master Norbert Mao, pushed back against Opondo. He asserted that Opondo does the needful and condemn human rights violations since he too now has a platform of being an MP, instead of waiting on Mao.
Mutenyo said Ofwono Opondo should not hide his personal cowardice and blame his fear to directly confront Gen MK on Norbert Mao who is merely a fellow official serving under the same government. Mutenyo said he was appalled to learn that Opondo isn’t the only public leader scapegoating his boss Mao instead of taking on the CDF themselves.
He equally called out PFF’s Nyanjura Doreen and Harold Kaija, who appeared with him for a Sunday TV show, for similarly castigating Mao for not pronouncing himself against the violation of their party president Erias Lukwago’s human rights.
