The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has reported steady progress on the Mbale Water Supply and Sanitation Project, saying the works are advancing according to schedule and are expected to significantly improve access to clean water and sanitation services in Mbale City and surrounding areas.

In an update posted on its official X account, NWSC highlighted several ongoing components of the project, including the construction of a water treatment plant at Bukitti/Jewa, the laying of water distribution pipelines across the city, and the installation of water reservoirs.

The corporation also noted that work is underway on the construction and rehabilitation of sewage treatment plants, including a new facility at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU). Other activities include the rehabilitation and expansion of sewer lines as well as the construction of public toilets aimed at improving sanitation standards in the city.

According to NWSC, the project is one of the largest water and sanitation infrastructure investments in the region and is expected to transform service delivery once completed.

The utility explained that the new system would increase water production capacity from the current 18 million litres per day to 30 million litres per day. The additional capacity is expected to address growing demand for water services in Mbale City, whose population has expanded in recent years due to urbanisation and economic growth.

Officials indicated that the project would not only enhance access to clean and safe water but also strengthen sanitation infrastructure, reducing environmental and public health challenges associated with inadequate wastewater management.

The corporation further stated that the expansion of water distribution networks and sewer systems would improve service coverage in both existing and newly developed areas of the city.

NWSC thanked residents and stakeholders for their patience and continued support during the implementation phase, noting that efforts were being intensified to fast-track completion of the project.

Once completed, the Mbale Water Supply and Sanitation Project is expected to provide a long-term solution to water shortages and sanitation challenges while supporting the city’s future growth and development.
