At the thanksgiving dinner for Gen Salim Saleh’s daughter Desire Muhooza, who was recently named State Minister for Agriculture, Speaker Oboth-Oboth urged new MPs to urgently become friends with Moses Byaruhanga if they want to effortlessly secure reelection in 2031.
Oboth-Oboth, whose Speakership many Ugandans are very proud of because of the very clear contrast with his predecessor Anita Among who allegedly destroyed many fellow leaders during her hey days, confessed that the President’s influential political assistant is the reason why he has easily been winning reelection in Budama County in Tororo.
He recalled how Byaruhanga personally got involved in training and ideologically equipping his campaign agents, which repeatedly enabled him to easily overcome his political opponents in the ballot box.
Oboth-Oboth added that his political career progression, which he attributed to strategic patience, wouldn’t have peaked into the success it is today without the mentoring role Moses Byaruhanga has played in his politics.
He recalled how it was Moses Byaruhanga who wrote a favorable political report on which the President based to appoint him a Minister in his Cabinet in 2021 as he prepared to commence on his 3rd term as an MP. He first became MP in 2011 after an eventful career as a state attorney.
Oboth-Oboth advised MPs who want to keep winning reelection to be deliberate about working with Byaruhanga because not only is he very close to the President but also knows a lot about community political mobilization. That he knows what one has to do in a constituency to remain very popular without having to spend a lot of money.
He also made it clear that he would never engage in acts of corruption as Speaker because his politics has never been about giving people money in order to qualify for their political support, endorsement and acceptability. Oboth-Oboth claimed that he won the Speakership race without having to bribe even one MP with Shs1,000/=.
This sharply contrasts with his predecessor, the much-hated Anita Among, who Norbert Mao says had become an ATM which endlessly splashed money to gain political legitimacy and acceptability.
Oboth-Oboth predicted that Desire Muhooza, whose post-election event he attended in Kiboga last February, is a political giant destined to rise to greater things in the coming years.
He called upon the people of Kiboga to loyally and jealously support their new Woman MP so that she concentrates on serving and transforming that part of Uganda because she is a public-spirited leader who genuinely means well.
Oboth-Oboth, who cracked jokes directed at Gen Saleh’s very good friend Norbert Mao who was present at the dinner event, asserted that the involvement of the likes of Moses Kigongo, Moses Byaruhanga, ONC boss Hadijah Namyalo and others in her politics is indicative of the fact that Muhooza is a rising political star in whom key decision-makers in the Movement have a lot of hope.
He was equally gratefully of the key political mobilization role Hajjat Namyalo played in amplifying his 2026 reelection messaging back home in Tororo.
