How Equity Bank Turned a Kibuli Slum Boy into a Scholar with Bigger Dreams

By Mulengera Reporters

For many young Ugandans, success begins as a distant dream — shaped by ambition but often constrained by circumstance. For Reagan Gibril Tumusiime, that dream started in the crowded slums of Kibuli and found new direction through an unlikely discovery and a life-changing opportunity from Equity Bank Uganda.

Tumusiime, a former student of God Cares High School in Wakiso District, is among the beneficiaries of the Equity Leaders Program (ELP), Equity Bank’s flagship initiative aimed at nurturing academically gifted young people into future leaders through education, mentorship and leadership development.

His story is one of resilience, determination and transformation.

Born in Fort Portal before his family relocated to Kampala in search of better opportunities, Tumusiime grew up in Kibuli under the care of his single mother. Life was challenging, and adapting to a new environment was not easy.

At school, Tumusiime struggled with confidence. He often felt out of place because of his accent and limited command of English, fearing ridicule from classmates.

However, his life took an unexpected turn while he was still in Primary Four.

One afternoon, while walking through his neighbourhood, Tumusiime stumbled upon what many would have dismissed as scrap, a broken laptop abandoned by the roadside.

Where others saw waste, Reagan saw possibility.

Driven by curiosity, he carried the damaged device home and attempted to power it using spare batteries. To his surprise, the screen flickered to life.

That moment would change everything.

“It changed something in me,” Reagan recalls.

The once shy boy from Kibuli became fascinated by technology. The old laptop sparked a passion that would later shape both his ambitions and career goals.

From that day forward, Reagan committed himself to his studies with renewed determination, aspiring to become a computer engineer.

Over time, fear gave way to confidence.

By Senior Six, Tumusiime had transformed into a focused young scholar with a clear vision for his future. His hard work paid off when he scored 20 points in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.

Even then, Reagan never imagined he would be selected for the highly competitive Equity Leaders Program.

Given Wakiso District’s large number of high-performing schools and students, he believed his chances were slim.

Then came another defining moment.

His mother received a phone call from Equity Bank informing her that Reagan had been selected among the district’s top-performing students to join the programme.

For the family, the news was overwhelming.

For Tusiime, it was confirmation that hard work, discipline and persistence can create opportunities regardless of one’s background.

Through the Equity Leaders Program, Equity Bank Uganda continues to empower bright but often disadvantaged youth through leadership training, mentorship, internship placements, university counselling and exposure to global academic and professional opportunities.

Beyond academics, the programme equips scholars with confidence, professionalism, discipline and leadership skills necessary to thrive in today’s competitive world.

Tusiime says the programme has fundamentally transformed how he views himself and his future.

“It helped me think beyond my environment and dream bigger,” he says.

Through mentorship and structured leadership training, Tusiime says he has learned to define his goals more clearly and prepare for a future where he can use technology to create solutions that positively impact society.

He also drew inspiration from remarks made by Equity Bank Uganda Managing Director Gift Shoko during the scholars’ induction ceremony.

“If you don’t know where you are going, every road will take you nowhere,” Shoko told the scholars — a message Tusiime says continues to guide him.

Today, Tusiime no longer views his circumstances as limitations. Instead, he sees challenges as stepping stones toward growth.

His journey is one of many stories demonstrating how Equity Bank Uganda is using education as a powerful tool for social and economic transformation.

Through initiatives such as the Equity Leaders Program, the bank is doing more than rewarding academic excellence. It is opening doors, nurturing talent and shaping a new generation of leaders determined to transform Uganda’s future.

For Tusiime, the journey from Kibuli’s narrow alleys to bigger dreams is only just beginning. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
