The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has congratulated President Yoweri Museveni upon his swearing-in for a fresh presidential term, while urging his administration to deepen respect for human rights, accountability, and inclusive economic empowerment.
In a statement dated May 11, 2026, UHRC Chairperson Mariam Wangadya described the inauguration as “both significant and symbolic,” saying it renews the constitutional bond between leadership and citizens.
The commission praised Uganda’s progress in strengthening legal and institutional protections for human rights, noting that public awareness and accountability structures have expanded over the years. However, Wangadya stressed that the real test of progress lies in the everyday experiences of ordinary Ugandans.
“The true measure of progress is found in the daily experiences of citizens, the extent to which rights are felt, protected, and respected in ordinary life,” the statement read.
UHRC also linked economic empowerment to the broader human rights agenda, arguing that wealth creation must remain inclusive and accessible, especially for youth, women, and marginalized communities.
“Economic empowerment is not separate from human rights; it is part of them,” Wangadya stated, adding that access to work and productive opportunities gives “real meaning to freedom and dignity.”
The commission further called for a governance approach anchored in accountability, rule of law, and citizen-centered leadership, saying the country’s strength is reflected in how it treats its most vulnerable citizens.
UHRC reaffirmed its commitment to working with government institutions to strengthen Uganda’s human rights landscape, emphasizing that human rights should be viewed as the foundation of governance rather than an obstacle.
President Museveni is set to be sworn in on May 12, 2026, beginning another term in office amid renewed calls for democratic governance, economic inclusion, and institutional accountability.
