Equity Bank’s impact on livelihoods took center stage as Dr. James Mwangi addressed members of Rotary International, highlighting how sustained investment in human capital is transforming communities across Africa.
Speaking to Rotarians under District 9214 recently, Group Managing director and chief executive Dr. Mwangi emphasized that real economic growth begins with empowering people at the grassroots—from classrooms to farms, and from women-led enterprises to marginalized youth. He noted that Equity Group Holdings has deliberately positioned itself not just as a financial institution, but as a catalyst for inclusive development.
According to Dr. Mwangi, the group has awarded 60,009 scholarships, opening doors to education for thousands of young people who would otherwise be locked out of opportunity. Beyond education, Equity has trained more than 2.4 million women and youth in financial literacy, equipping them with skills to manage resources, build savings, and invest sustainably.
The bank’s social protection initiatives have reached over 5.9 million individuals, providing a safety net for vulnerable populations. In agriculture, a key sector across the region, more than 3.8 million farmers have received support to improve productivity and resilience. Meanwhile, 962,924 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have undergone entrepreneurship training, strengthening the backbone of local economies.
Dr. Mwangi stressed that these figures represent more than milestones, they reflect lives changed and opportunities created. “Livelihoods grow when human capital is nurtured,” he said, urging stakeholders to prioritize long-term empowerment over short-term gains.
As Equity Bank Uganda continues to expand its footprint, the institution’s model underscores a broader message: sustainable development is achieved not merely through financial access, but by enabling people to thrive.
