In a stunning twist that is reshaping Uganda’s conversation on music, regulation, and responsibility, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has extended a lifeline to controversial artist Dynaso Wegoso, signaling a possible comeback after the explosive fallout surrounding his banned hit “Mukube Paver.”
Just a week ago, the Commission came down hard ordering the immediate suspension of the song across all media platforms. The directive, signed by Executive Director Nyombi Thembo, followed a surge of public complaints and a troubling rise in viral trends where young people imitated violent and risky behavior allegedly inspired by the track.
UCC warned that the song’s messaging both direct and implied risked normalizing aggression, particularly among minors, and posed a growing threat to public safety. The ban sent shockwaves through Uganda’s entertainment industry, igniting fierce debate over censorship and artistic freedom.
But in a surprising turn, the story is no longer just about restriction, it is about reform.
Thembo through his X on Thursday revealed that he personally engaged Dynaso Wegoso in a closed-door meeting at UCC head offices in Bugoloobi, Makindye division aimed at finding a way forward. While standing firm on UCC’s mandate to protect the public, he struck a more reconciliatory tone, emphasizing that the Commission is not in the business of silencing creativity.
Instead, UCC has now committed to working with the artist to refine his content and align it with community standards, effectively opening the door for a carefully managed return.
“We are here to ensure sanity on our airwaves, not to frustrate talent,” Thembo noted, adding that in today’s digital era, artists must remain conscious of the lasting impact of their work. He warned that a single controversial release can jeopardize long-term opportunities, including endorsements and professional growth.
