Incoming Kawempe South female Lord Councilor Shamim Nambassa has secured the endorsement of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council for the position of Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor. This comes after Lord Mayor elect, Hon. Balimwezo Ronald Nsubuga, assured the Muslim community of giving them the slot, with a commitment to filling it with a female candidate.
Nambassa, one of the female Authority Councillors elected, must be grateful to receive the support of Muslim leaders in Kampala. Her efforts paid off when she secured the backing of the Old Kampala Muslim group, following a meeting with their leadership on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.
The other female candidates, Nusfa Nakato, Nakabugo and Sarah Mukisa, are also vying for the position, but Nambassa’s endorsement gives her a significant advantage. Sarah Mukisa is the Personal Assistant to the NUP President Hon. Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert but many are doubting whether she is really a Muslim, according to one of the NUP leaders.
The Deputy Lord Mayor plays a crucial role in representing the Lord Mayor on the Business Committee, among other assignments. According to the KCCA Act, the Lord Mayor presents the Deputy Lord Mayor to Council during the second Council meeting.
Nambassa’s endorsement is seen as a significant boost to her political career and she is expected to leverage this support to secure the position. The outcome of who finally Balimwezo gives it to is eagerly awaited, with many looking forward to seeing who will fill the Deputy Lord Mayor slot to replace the outgoing Doreen Nyanjura.
