Equity Bank Uganda has commissioned 100 outstanding students into the fourth cohort of its prestigious Equity Leaders Program (ELP), reinforcing the their commitment to nurturing a new generation of transformative leaders across the Uganda and Africa.
The commissioning ceremony which was held at African Bible University, Lubowa, May 10, brought together stakeholders in education, finance, and leadership development, all united by a shared vision of empowering Uganda’s brightest youth through mentorship, paid internships, and university admission support (both locally and internationally).
The Managing Director Director, Mr. Gift Shoko, emphasized the Bank’s long-term vision of investing in human capital as a driver for socio-economic transformation.
“This program is not just about education. It’s about equipping young Ugandans with the tools they need to lead with integrity, innovation, and impact,” the big man said calmly but firmly.
The ELP, now active in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and the DRC, is a flagship initiative under the Equity Group Foundation’s Education and Leadership Development pillar. Since its rollout in Uganda, it has benefitted 419 scholars, selected based on their academic excellence in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.
Dr. Joanne Korir, Director of Operations at Equity Group Foundation, who delivered remarks on behalf of Executive Chairman Dr. James Mwangi said, “Today we commission not just students, but future leaders,” she said, adding that the bank remains steadfast in their commitment to bridge opportunity gaps and create pathways for excellence.
The new scholars will now embark on a three- to six-month paid internship with Equity Bank, gaining hands-on experience across departments, earning a monthly pay, and receiving structured mentorship.
Those pursuing education abroad will also benefit from a college counseling program that offers expert guidance on essay writing, university selection, and preparation for international examinations.
Board Director Mr. Sam Bwaya praised the scholars for completing the rigorous induction process and urged them to uphold the values of service, discipline, and excellence.
The program already boasts nearly 1,000 students admitted to global universities, making it one of the most impactful youth development initiatives in the region.
