Mr. Fred K. Bamwesigye, the Director General (DG) of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), has been appointed to the powerful Executive Committee of the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (CANSO), a global body that governs air traffic service providers.
The appointment was made official during the 29th CANSO Annual General Meeting held in Lisbon, Portugal, on May 15, 2025, at the sidelines of Airspace World 2025, and announce on Friday, by UCAA.
Bamwesigye was nominated by CANSO Africa and backed unanimously by CANSO Global, and he now joins the top league of aviation decision-makers, replacing Dr. Muhammad Mousa, former boss of ASECNA.
The CANSO Executive Committee is where major decisions are made, from approving budgets to shaping the future of air navigation. Simply put, it’s where global aviation strategy is crafted, and Uganda now has a seat at the table.
The committee consists of five regional CEOs, five elected Members at Large like Bamwesigye, and two from associate members. And while regional heads serve one year, Bamwesigye’s new term will run for three years.
This move has been met with applause back home. UCAA couldn’t hide its excitement, congratulating their DG and calling it a well-deserved win.
A man who works hard never misses his reward, goes the saying, and for Bamwesigye, the sky is no longer the limit, but his playground.
As Uganda celebrates this milestone, it sends a clear message, that the Pearl of Africa isn’t just watching from the sidelines, but now helping steer the global aviation ship.
