The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has called for sustained investment in people, processes and technology to strengthen the protection of critical communications infrastructure and the digital services that support citizens and Uganda’s economy.
The call was made on Tuesday during the opening of the 2026 Operator Cybersecurity Technical Training and Drill, being held at UCC Conference Hall in Bugolobi from September 22 to 25 under the theme, “Cyber Quest: Learn. Prepare. Protect.”
UCC Director of ICT and Research, Eng. Christine Mugimba, who represented the Commission’s leadership at the opening, emphasised the importance of continuously strengthening cybersecurity capabilities as threats to communications infrastructure evolve.
The four-day engagement is being hosted by the Uganda Computer Emergency Response Team (UgCERT), with support from the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST). It brings together operators from Uganda’s communications sector for technical training and practical cybersecurity simulations.
The programme is designed to strengthen participants’ ability to identify, manage and respond to cybersecurity incidents. It also provides an opportunity for operators to test existing incident-response procedures and improve coordination and information-sharing across the sector.
A key component of this year’s programme is the use of practical cyberattack simulations, allowing participants to test their preparedness in scenarios that mirror the challenges organisations may face during real-world cybersecurity incidents.
The training also features discussions on artificial intelligence and its application in cybersecurity, reflecting the growing need for cybersecurity professionals to continually update their skills and adapt to emerging technologies and threats.
The 2026 event marks the seventh Operator Cybersecurity Technical Training and the sixth Cybersecurity Drill organised as part of efforts to strengthen cybersecurity preparedness within Uganda’s communications sector.
The organisers said the initiative is intended to contribute to a more coordinated and resilient response to cyber incidents, while reinforcing the protection of communications services on which citizens, businesses and the wider economy depend.
