Speaking at Wandegeya Mosque on Saturday during a Dhuwa session that was convened to pray for Muslim faithful preparing to make pilgrimage to Mecca, grandfather of Islam in Uganda Prince Kassim Nakibinge of Kibuli Hill called out security forces and the entire NRM government to refrain from acts of impunity and torture.
Referencing on the torture that was inflicted on Bobi Wine’s bodyguard Eddie Mutwe, whose plight the CDF Gen MK even bragged and joked about asserting that it was in order for Edward Sebuwufu to be tortured at his basement while learning Runyankore words besides being compelled to salute Gen Museveni’s portrait.
Nakibinge, fearless as always, said that such acts will only diminish political support for Gen Museveni’s government as opposed to increasing it.
He advised that those acts of criminalizing people like Eddie Mutwe based on their political beliefs will only create more resentment towards Gen Museveni and the entire membership of ruling political establishment.
He advised those wanting to make Museveni and his NRM more acceptable to the Ugandan populace to invest in explaining to the population what his accomplishments have been as opposed to criminalizing those who think differently.
Amidst chants of Allah Akbar from the large gathering of Muslims, Nakibinge said he has been very outspoken against these enforced disappearance operations and torture of political dissenters in safe houses and won’t be keeping quiet against torture, violations of personal liberty rights and other social justice issues.
He implied that religious leaders like himself are obliged to use the privileged platform they have at their disposal to serve as the voice of the voiceless.
Were he to still be alive, a colossus like Tamale Mirundi would have responded to Prince Nakibinge for contradicting Gen MK this directly.
Nakibinge is merely joining other leaders like Justice & Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao, NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi, UHRC’s Mariam Wangadya, Winnie Byanyima and the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga who called out Gen MK much earlier on while imploring him to change course.
