By Mulengera Reporters

The Speaker of Parliament and Second Vice Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Anita Annet Among, launched a scathing attack on Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi during a campaign rally for President Yoweri Museveni at Nkokoma Primary School in Butambala District. Among accused Kivumbi of hypocrisy, political double-dealing, and involvement in the controversial Coffee Bill.

Among called on the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), now under the Ministry of Works and Transport, to reclaim land occupied by Kivumbi’s mother, insisting that the family had already been compensated to pave way for road construction but had refused to vacate.

She questioned why Kivumbi, a salaried Member of Parliament, continues to reside at his mother’s home whenever he visits Butambala, saying his earnings are sufficient for him to build his own residence in Butambala instead of blocking government infrastructure projects.

The Speaker accused Kivumbi of misleading the public by presenting himself as a fierce opposition figure while privately cooperating with the ruling party. She alleged that during parliamentary debates on the Coffee Bill, President Museveni personally consulted Kivumbi using her phone, after which the bill was passed, only for Kivumbi to later turn around and accuse the NRM of wrongdoing. Among said Kivumbi cannot claim moral authority to abuse President Museveni and the party after allegedly advising the President on legislation he later condemned publicly.

Among also criticized Kivumbi for failing to invest in his constituency. She contrasted him with FDC’s Yusuf Nsibambi, who constructed Jalia City in Mpigi along the Kampala-Masaka road, creating jobs for local residents. Among said Kivumbi, instead of developing Butambala, chose to construct a hotel in the wetlands of Kira.

She further accused Kivumbi of political double standards, claiming he sides with the NRM at night but presents himself as an opposition leader during day while consistently attacking the ruling party and the President.

President Museveni, present at the rally, used the platform to propose a law allowing voters to recall non-performing leaders from office, citing absenteeism and poor delivery among some opposition politicians, particularly in Mpigi District. He urged residents to consider the proposal as a means to promote accountability.

Earlier, Minister for Microfinance and Buganda Regional NRM Chairperson Haruna Kasolo also criticized Kivumbi for attacking the party while doing little for his constituency.

Meanwhile, NRM Butambala District Chairperson Hebert Mugalula Bwenje pledged to deliver at least 60 percent of the vote to President Museveni in the upcoming elections, an improvement from the 25 percent secured in 2021. He also thanked the President for appointing Ramathan Ggoobi as Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury at the Ministry of Finance, and Hajji Ibrahim Kaddunabbi Lubega as CEO of the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA).
