For a school that prides itself as the training ground for Uganda’s leaders, Ntare School is now facing a scandal its famous old boys would reportedly find deeply disturbing.
On Sunday night, violent chaos allegedly erupted in the Mbarara-based school after four students were accused by their peers of engaging in and promoting homosexuality. What started as whispers reportedly turned into a manhunt.
Two suspects were said to have been saved by teachers, while the other two allegedly fled for safety as mobs threatened to beat them.
When police were called in to restore order, angry students allegedly smashed windows and damaged property, accusing the administration of ignoring a problem they claim has been quietly growing.
Some students reportedly alleged that it was shameful for homosexuality to be linked to a school where many top leaders studied and where discipline has long been a point of pride.
According to sources, headteacher Saul Rwampororo confirmed that the violence was triggered by suspicions of homosexuality and said investigations are underway, noting that Ntare has in the past suspended students over related matters. Rwizi Regional Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira said no arrests had been made yet but police were keeping a close watch.
For the Ntare School Old Boys Association, the allegations have come as a shock. Their chairman, Apollo Kashanku, said it was the first time he had heard of such claims at the school.
The Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023, which Museveni strongly backed, prescribes life imprisonment for those found guilty of engaging in or promoting homosexual acts.
Now, the question troubling the Ntare community is whether the school’s famous reputation can withstand the weight of allegations that, if proven true, would mark one of its darkest chapters yet.
