As Ugandans prepare to welcome the New Year 2026, the Uganda Police Force has outlined comprehensive security measures to ensure safe and peaceful celebrations, with a particular focus on fireworks displays.

Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke while addressing the press at Police headquarters on Monday, reported that the country experienced a generally peaceful Christmas period, with no major security breaches. Only a few isolated criminal cases were registered, alongside a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of seven members of one family.

With just two days remaining to the New Year, ACP Rusoke extended wishes of peace, joy, and unity to all Ugandans during the festive season.

He reminded organizers that guidelines issued on 15th December 2025 for entertainment events, shows, and safety measures for prayer gatherings remain in force.

As overnight prayers are expected to attract large congregations, organizers are urged to strictly follow these guidelines and work closely with the police and other relevant authorities to ensure the safety of participants.

The police emphasized that Counter Terrorism (CT) officers will have a central role in supervising fireworks displays across the country.

All fireworks materials will be escorted by the black uniformed CT officers, who will monitor the events alongside District Police Commanders (DPCs) to ensure proper security and public safety. Prior inspections of all venues will be conducted to confirm their suitability for fireworks, and any display that fails to comply with the guidelines may be halted immediately.

Fireworks displays are permitted only for licensed blasters representing approved applicants, and all events must be publicly advertised through print and electronic media, including local FM radio stations and newspapers.

The duration of any display is limited to five minutes, and any unused fireworks materials must be handled exclusively by individuals holding a valid explosives blaster’s license. Non-compliance with these rules may lead to immediate termination of the display and other appropriate actions.

In addition to fireworks safety, ACP Rusoke advised all road users to exercise caution and responsibility while traveling after 1st January 2026, as many people return to cities or travel to their villages. The public was strongly cautioned against burning tires, which damages infrastructure, especially roads, and against firing shots into the air, which poses serious risks to public safety.

Emergency contact numbers have been provided to ensure rapid response in case of incidents. These include 0800 199 699 (toll-free) for general emergencies, 0707 600 773 (Airtel), 0776 999 136 (MTN), and 0800 121 222 (toll-free line for fire emergencies).

The Uganda Police Force and other security agencies remain committed to maintaining a safe, peaceful, and enjoyable festive season. Citizens were urged to celebrate responsibly, remain vigilant, and cooperate with authorities to ensure the success of the New Year celebrations.
