Police Ban Processions, Ambulance Misuse Amid Nationwide Election Campaigns

The Uganda Police Force has prohibited several activities in the ongoing presidential, parliamentary, local government, and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) campaigns, warning candidates and their supporters to strictly follow the law.

Speaking at a Monday press briefing at Police Headquarters in Naguru, ACP Kituuma Rusoke, Police Spokesperson, outlined the prohibited activities and provided guidance to ensure peaceful and safe campaigns.

Processions are strictly banned, and candidates are instructed to meet their supporters at designated campaign grounds.

The use of ambulances as lead vehicles is also prohibited, with drivers warned against misusing emergency vehicles for political purposes.

ACP Rusoke condemned all forms of violence and cited instances of election posters being defaced, warning that offenders will face prosecution.

He further condemned cyber-crimes linked to campaigns, stressing that the law is clear and punishments are severe.

Security concerns have also arisen from criminals disguising themselves in party T-shirts and paraphernalia to rob campaigngoers of cash, phones, and other valuables.

The police have vowed to deal decisively with such groups.

Traffic violations remain a major concern, including the overloading of vehicles during campaign activities.

ACP Rusoke called on candidates to coordinate closely with the police, traffic authorities, emergency medical services, and the fire brigade to ensure safety during campaign events.

He urged all candidates to collaborate with key stakeholders, including the police and the Electoral Commission, to avoid conflicts and prevent clashes between rival supporters.

Offenders will be held individually accountable, whether apprehended on the spot or at a later time.
