In a dramatic political twist, former Uganda Media Centre Executive Director Ofwono Opondo has been declared unopposed as the Member of Parliament for Older Persons in Eastern Uganda, following the sudden and unexpected withdrawal of his rival, Joram Mpande Kigenyi of the Democratic Party.
The stunning turn of events came after the Electoral Commission Tribunal ruled on a petition questioning Opondo’s nomination, with Kigenyi conceding defeat in the face of allegations of forgery in his nomination documents.
“I have been declared the unopposed MP for Older Persons in Eastern Uganda,” Opondo triumphantly announced after the Tribunal’s verdict, marking an early and unchallenged entry into the 2026 elections.
This political shift comes after a highly publicized resignation by Opondo in May, who stepped down from his long-standing position at the Uganda Media Centre to pursue elective office.
A loyal ally of President Museveni, Opondo’s decades of service to the ruling NRM party, which saw him playing key roles in presidential campaigns and communications, set the stage for his swift political ascent.
With Kigenyi out of the race, Opondo’s path to Parliament now seems clear, as he gears up to take his place in Uganda’s political arena.
