When she addressed her supporters at one of her Mukono residences a few days ago, Betty Nambooze was combative and in a fighting mood. She indicated to them that she is ready for a big fight and she isn’t scared of any of her adversaries, challenging her for Mukono Municipality, who include outgoing LC5 Chairman Bakaluba Mukasa, outgoing woman MP Anifa Nabukeera and DP’s George Kagimu.
Nambooze denied claims that she is the one who influenced Bobi Wine not to give NUP flags to Bakaluba and Nabukeera who had wanted to keep their positions. Bakaluba was replaced with Jackson Muyanja Ssenyonga and Nabukeera by Sheila Amaniyo, who had just defected from NRM.
Nambooze told her audience that she too had people she wanted to get the flag but they didn’t. These included Muyanja who she wanted for Mukono South MP Seat and Fred Ssimbwa who she wanted to be retained as Nakifuuma county MP for NUP. She said there is no way she would influence the duo’s removal as has been alleged.
She explained that Kyagulanyi was right to reject Bakaluba because Mukono residents clearly protested his retention during a public rally at Ntawo. She said as a pro-people leader, Kyagulanyi had no option but to drop Bakaluba who she claimed continues to be NRM. She apologized to Mukono residents for persuading them to vote for both Bakaluba and Nabukeera in 2021.
She explained that Nabukeera was dropped because she had many discrepancies in her identification and academic documents. That information about her on the parliamentary directory is different from what she submitted to the NUP party for vetting purposes. She added that even her real names indicate she isn’t a Muganda just like Sheilah Amaniyo, an Itesot with whom NUP replaced her.
Nambooze also challenged Nabukeera to prove that her name appears on the roll of authorized advocates who are permitted to enter courts and practice law in Uganda as is the case with Shamim Malende. Nambooze also demanded to know why Nabukeera is never present when Shamim Malende leads other NUP lawyers to go and defend foot soldiers and other human rights violation victims.
She also accused Nabukeera of being a very selfish and secretive leader who never allows NUP comrades to have access to her home in Mukono. In contrast, she referred to her own home which is open to all NUP activists from the whole of Greater Mukono. She bragged about hosting fellow NUPians from across Kyaggwe sometimes for as long as five days.
That they sleep at her home for that long while eating whatever they feel like. She said she offered one of her homes to serve as NUP headquarters for Mukono after town landlords feared to rent them office space. She bragged that she is the greatest politician for opposition in Mukono which is why DP collapsed (no longer has good candidates nor even office) the moment she left.
She scorned Kagimu for being the man under whose watch DP in Mukono has sunk into total oblivion. She challenged Bakaluba Mukasa and Nabukeera to go ahead and win their respective races for 2021 in order to demonstrate and prove to the world that she isn’t the one who made them win in 2021.
