In Uganda, domestic violence is real and in most cases victims have been women and children. But in the case of Kampala University owner, Prof Badru Ddungu Kateregga, this established norm has been breached. The veteran educationist says he is still alive because Allah used his own children (led by Badria Kateregga and Fakia Kateregga) to intervene so as to give him 2nd chance at life. This is in reference to spousal violence and emotional abuse he says he has been enduring for some good time now.
Kateregga, who will soon be 78, says that his Munyarwanda wife Jolly Shubaiha Kateregga (with whom he has twins and has been running KU) had successfully turned his Palatial residence based on Buziga hill into a torture chamber of some sort. That following certain marital disagreements, Shubaiha became bellicose and started clobbering Prof Kateregga while haranguing him on a daily basis.
Kateregga says that one day the madam woke up on the wrong side of the bed and hit him hard with a hard blunt object which badly fractured some of his internal organs around the head area. On this fateful occasion, the Professor says that his tormentor clobbered him real hard and left him for dead. He sunk into coma and was unconscious for weeks in the hospital. Teams of specialists have had to work on him for months-and he is now better though recovery is still ongoing.
Kateregga, who has a total of 25 children, had to call in his older children who work and live abroad to come and rescue him after he had locked up and kept his incommunicado inside his own Buziga residence. It’s a big home but which had been turned into a prison of some sort for Kateregga. The Professor suspects his tormentor, who he now regrets marrying, wanted him dead.
He thinks she has interest in excluding him and going on to dominate Kampala University, a very successful business enterprise with branches in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. The headquarters is in Gaba in Makindye Division. Badria and Fakia say their father would be dead by now had Allah not intervened through them on good time. Kateregga maintains that KU is his business and his alone-totally built on his personal sweat and no one will be tolerated excluding him and his children from it. Whoever tries will face extreme resistance-and will predictably fail. Kateregga has narrated everything to his king and Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga.
Over the weekend, Prof Kateregga held a thanksgiving event during which he narrated his painful ordeal to his family members and friends from Bagagga kwagalana group. He made it clear he regrets the day he met his tormentor who he said didn’t stop at harming him inside his own Buziga home but has also since proceeded to exclude him from his Buziga property which he had single-handedly prepared all along to serve as his retirement home. He says that the Nnalongo has no claim of right nor any legal basis to deprive him of his Buziga home.
He implored fellow men to learn from his near-death experience and tread very cautiously next time any of them sets out to take on anyone daughter for a wife. Kateregga says he can’t believe the woman he willingly brought in at a time she was humble, vulnerable and harmless (materially not having much) has turned into a nightmare for him.
Nnalongo Shubaiha, who is struggling to continue being one of the top decision-makers inside the KU hierarchy from where Kateregga is determined to dethrone her because he isn’t interested in her anymore, says there is nothing wrong she has done except the old man from Kabasanda is an insatiable Casanova and sex-pest who always uses women and dumps them the moment the vibe and juice-ness in them diminishes.
Bukedde media, which for months has been an authority on the Kateregga story, quotes Nnalongo as making it clear that Prof Badru Ddungu Kateregga (who is also a Buganda Lukiiko member & a leader in his Mpologoma clan) is out to demonize her because he wants to build a case and justify his decision to dump her and take on a much younger babe who he believes can warm his nights better.
Over the weekend, a sympathy-seeking Kateregga told his guests that he was now a homeless old man because Shubaiha had effectively taken over his Buziga palace while denying him access. Kateregga, who introduced his 25 children to his guests and has since decreed he doesn’t want Shubaiha involved in his University business anymore, unequivocally stated that his highly learned and exposed Diaspora-based children are the only ones with authority to run his estate should the Almighty Allah call him.
Prof Kateregga, who for many years was a Professor at Makerere until 2014 when he retired from there, isn’t an ordinary man because beyond his role at Mengo, he is also a founding member of the National Resistance Movement and NRA whose Nairobi-based external wing he leveraged to generously contribute large sums of money to fund the 5-year bush war which brought Gen YK Museveni to power in 1986.
